What is Astrology?

Astrology is the name given to the practice of studying the positions of celestial bodies, such as planets and stars, and the impact they have on our lives. For example, the time of year and, as a result, the position of the stars in the sky, at the time a person is born is thought to have a significant impact on their personality, as well as shaping their future relationships and general fortunes.

Astrology reading is a rich field with much that can be learned, but by far the most widely known area of this field is that of star signs. A person’s “sign” refers to the twelve constellations of the zodiac, each corresponding to a constellation in the night sky. This is a type of sun-sign astrology, and is most commonly seen in the form of horoscopes in newspapers and online. Most astrologers will concede that sun-sign astrology is very limited due to the lack of information; after all, the predictions that horoscopes make are based on your birthday alone.

As with any field, the more information you have, the more accurate your conclusions. That is why astrologers will check the locations of the planets at the time of birth-as well as many other elements-to put together a complex profile of the subject, making them better able to give a reading on the subject’s life.

Astrology is quite unique in that there are many ways to practice it, and different cultures throughout history have done so in their own way. Many of these historical forms of astrology have coalesced into what we know as modern western astrology. Eastern cultures still practice their own forms, however, with Tibetan, Vedic, and Chinese astrology being the better known of these forms.

That being said, western astrology is not a monolithic field by any stretch, and there are many methods that are often separated by the intended result;

Mundane Astrology

This form of astrology relates to larger-scale affairs like economies and wars.

Interrogatory Astrology

This is typically the type of astrology that most people think of when talking about western astrology. Based on a person’s birthdate, it seeks to determine how a person’s life will unfold based on the initial state (the positions of the planets, etc.). This is sometimes referred to as the Law of Beginnings.

Natal Astrology

This is typically the type of astrology that most people think of when talking about western astrology. Based on a person’s birthdate, it seeks to determine how a person’s life will unfold based on the initial state (the positions of the planets, etc.). This is sometimes referred to as the Law of Beginnings.
